PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS

SECTION 12304

MODULAR LAMINATE CASEWORK SPECIFICATION

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.00 RELATED DOCUMENTS:

A. Drawings and provisions of the contract, including General Conditions, Supplementary Conditions, and Division 1, apply to this section.

1.01 WORK INCLUDED:

A. Furnish manufactured casework and accessories as indicated on the drawings, schedules, and specified herein. Where specific materials, finishes, construction details and hardware are specified herein, the casework contractor shall be held in strict accordance. One manufacturer to assure uniformity and the ability to provide additional components after the completion of this contract shall provide all items in this section.

B. The work includes all countertops, components, and related items specified herein. Work shall also include any filler panels and scribe pieces as necessary for a complete installation.

1.02 RELATED WORK (NOT INCLUDED)

A. Sinks and service fixtures, service and waste lines and all connections, vents, hoods and ducting within or adjacent to casework furnished and installed under Mechanical Division 15.

B. Electrical service fixtures, service lines, conduit, wiring and all connections furnished and installed under Electrical Division 16.

C. Base molding furnished and installed under Finishes Division 9.

D. Blocking within walls where indicated furnished and installed under Rough Carpentry Division 6.

E. Locks master keyed to building, locks furnished and installed under Doors and Windows Division 8.

F. Appliances, unless specifically noted on plans as included in this section.

G. General millwork and/or custom cabinetry furnished and installed under Architectural Woodwork Division 6.

1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE:

A. Provide manufactured casework, countertops and related items furnished by the same supplier for single responsibility and integration with other building trades.

B. Manufactured casework must conform to design, materials, workmanship and function as shown on drawings and specified.

C. Quality standards shall be in accordance with AW.I. Section 16008 and any additional requirements specified herein.

D. Casework Manufacturer and Contractor shall guarantee casework materials and workmanship for two years from the date of installation. Accessories such as Countertops, panels, etc. shall be guaranteed for a period of one full year from date of installation. All hardware should carry a limited lifetime warranty.

1.04 SUBMITTALS:

A. Shop Drawings:

1. Submit (5) sets shop drawings in compliance with Division 1 Section 01300 for the fabrication and installation of casework and countertops. Include location of each item, dimensioned plans, elevations, and large scale details. Also include service run spaces and sink centerlines.

2. Coordinate shop drawings with other work related items specified elsewhere.

3. Shop drawings to be submitted within (30) days of casework contract award.

B. Samples:

1. Submit samples of casework manufacturers decorative laminate colors, patterns, and textures for exposed and semi-exposed materials for architect’s selection. Samples of other materials or hardware shall be made available upon request.

2. Architect may request a full-size sample based on specification herein for evaluation prior to approval. Samples may be held by architect/owner until completion of project to insure compliance with specifications.

1.05 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Deliver casework only after submittal data is approved and field conditions have been verified.

B. Deliver casework only after building is secure, ventilated and wet operations are complete.

C. Protect finished surfaces during transit, storage and handling to prevent damage and soiling.

D. Store materials in a ventilated place, protected from the weather and with a relative humidity of 60% or less at 70- 75 Degrees Fahrenheit.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURER:

A. MANUFACTURER:

1. For purpose of determining minimum performance and quality standards this specification is based upon casework manufactured by Perfection Cabinetry., 152County Road 1297 Cullman, Alabama 35058

B. ALTERNATE MANUFACTURER:

1. It is the intent of this specification to establish performance and quality criteria consistent with pre-established standards of design and function herein described. Where specific materials, finish options, construction details, and hardware are specified herein, the casework manufacturer will be held in strict compliance.

2.02 MATERIALS AND DEFINITIONS

A. DEFINITIONS OF SURFACES:

1. Exposed Surfaces: Those surfaces visible when drawers and solid doors are closed, surfaces behind full glass doors, bottoms of cabinets more than 54 " above finished floor, and tops of cabinets less than 72" above finished floor or are visible from an upper floor or staircase.

2. Semi-Exposed Surfaces: Those surfaces visible when drawer and solid doors are open, and bottoms of cabinets more than 30" and up to 54" above finished floor.

3. Concealed Surfaces: Those surfaces not visible after installation

B. CORE MATERIALS:

1. Particleboard: 47# density Industrial Particleboard meeting or exceeding ANSV 208.1 -1993 M-3 standards. Thicknesses used are 1/4 ", 1/2", 3/4", 1 " & 1-1/8".

C. DECORATIVE LAMINATES:

1. High-pressure decorative laminate GP28 (.028) vertical surfaces, NEMA Test LD-3 -1993.

2. High-pressure decorative laminate GP50 (.050) horizontal surfaces, NEMA Test LD-3 -1993.

3. High-pressure decorative laminate PF42 (.042) horizontal surfaces, NEMA Test LD-3 -1993.

4. High-pressure cabinet liner CL20 (.020) NEMA Test LD-3 -1993.

5. Thermo-fused melamine laminate tested to NEMA Test LD-3 -1991 -GP-20 (Test procedures are identical to those for testing high pressure laminates).

6. High-pressure backer BK20 (.020)

D. LAMINATE COLOR SELECTIONS:

1. Colors for exposed surfaces, high pressure decorative laminate GP28 (.028) vertical grade with matte finish, shall be selected from the current year of "WilsonArt", "Formica" and "Nevamar" standard solid and wood grain offerings. There is a maximum of five selections per project.

2. Semi-exposed surfaces (including drawer boxes), thermo-fused melamine board, shall be selected from the manufacturers standard White (#1573-60), Almondine (D30-60), Dark Grey (D92-60), Light Grey (D381-60).

3. Colors for countertop surfaces, high pressure decorative laminate GP50 (.050) and PF42 (.042) horizontal grade with matte finish, shall be selected from the current year of "WilsonArt", "Formica" and "Nevamar" standard solid colors, patterns and wood grains. There is a maximum of five selections per project.

E. EDGING MATERIALS/COLORS:

1. Exposed edges including door and drawer fronts, cabinet body edges to receive (.018) PVC edge banding. Color to match the selected laminate color. Machine applied with waterproof hot melt adhesive. PVC edge is to be crack and chip resistant.

2. Semi-exposed edges to be (.018) PVC edge banding, machine applied with waterproof hot melt adhesive. Color to match cabinet interior color.

3. 3MM PVC edge banding, machine applied with waterproof hot melt adhesive. Both edges and outside comers of drawer and door fronts are to be machined with a 3MM radius for safety and appearance. PVC is available in over (20) color selections w/color thru, including wood grains.

2.03 CABINET HARDWARE

A. HINGES:

1. Reveal overlay style cabinets will use a heavy duty, five knuckle hospital tip institutional type hinge. Each hinge will be secured with a minimum of nine screws. Hinges shall permit door to swing 270 degrees. Doors over 48" in height shall have three hinges per door. Color shall be selected from the manufacturers standard powder coat finishes of Almond, Chrome, White and Black.

2. Flush overlay style cabinets will use totally concealed, self-closing, European style hinges. Available in either a 125-degree or 170-degree swing. Hinges shall have six-way adjustment. Doors 38" to 61" in height to have three hinges, doors over 61 " in height to receive four hinges.

B. DOOR CATCHES:

1. Will be provided for doors with five knuckle hinges. One 7-pound pull magnetic catch per door on base and wall units. Two 7-pound pull magnetic catches per door on all doors over 48" in height. Hinges for flush overlay style cabinets are self-closing.

C. PULLS:

1. One shall be supplied for each door and drawer front. The pull at drawer fronts shall be located on the centerline to ensure ease of operation and maximize drawer slide life. The following pull selections shall be available for Architects to choose from:

2. 96MM Aluminum 5/16" diameter wire pull. Available in either Polished or Brushed finishes.

3. Nylon 5/16" diameter wire pulls available in four colors: Almond, Dove Grey, White and Black.

4. Semi-recessed, injection molded ABS plastic, glue and screw fastened. Color to blend with selected exterior finish. Pull design shall be compatible with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

D. DRAWER SLIDES:

1. Standard drawers and knee space drawers shall be "Blum" 230M with epoxy coated finish. Slides are self-closing with nylon rollers and positive stop in both directions. Slides will have a 100-pound load rating and have a lifetime warranty as offered by the manufacturer.

2. File drawers shall be "Blum" 430E full extension with epoxy-coated finish. Slides will have a 150-pound load rating and have a lifetime warranty as offered by the manufacturer

E. ADJUSTABLE SHELF SUPPORTS:

1. Also available Injection molded twin pin clear plastic shelf clips adjustable on 32MM centers with 3/4" and 1" locking tabs.

2. Shelf supports shall be 5MM diameter clear plastic w/metal pin. Supports are adjustable on 32MM (approx. 1-1/4") centers.

F. LOCKS:

1. Locks for doors and drawers, where specified, shall be "National Lock" M4-7054C disc tumbler, removable core, and cam style lock. Locks for 3/4" thick sliding doors shall be a disc tumble plunger type lock and sliding glass doors shall have a ratchet type lock.

2. All locks shall be supplied with two keys per lock and be keyed as requested with the ability to be master keyed.

3. Elbow catches will be used on inactive doors for all base and wall cabinets. Chain bolts will be used on inactive tall cabinet doors only when an elbow catch could not be suitably placed.

4. Banks of drawers specified with locks keyed differently shall have full depth shelves separating each drawer to prevent theft from the drawer above.

G. CLOTHES RODS:

1. Clothes rods shall be 1-1/4" diameter chrome plated heavy duty steel installed with captive sockets.

H. MIRRORS:

1. Mirrors shall be 1/4" thick polished mirror plate. Teachers Wardrobes to receive 8”X10” mirror w/plastic mirror clips for fastening.

I. FILE SUSPENSION:

1. All file drawers shall be supplied with a hanging rail system attached to drawer box.

2.04 CONSTRUCTION

A. CONSTRUCTION:

1. All cabinets are to be plant assembled in modular units. Door and drawer faces cover the cabinet body members with reveals sufficient for operating clearance. Bases shall be a separate cabinet component and be attached at the plant and designed to carry the load of the end panels and bottom to the floor. Adjustment of door and drawer fronts as well as all hardware shall take place at the plant.

B. JOINERY:

1. Cabinet boxes are assembled using dowel construction. Dowels are 8mm diameter and fluted to allow for adequate amounts of glue. Cabinets less than 15" depth have four (4) dowels per joint; those greater than 15" deep have six (6) dowels per joint.

C. ASSEMBLY:

1. Cases are squared under pressure in a case clamp. While under pressure the cabinet back is slid into dados machined in case ends and bottom. A Nailer is attached with a minimum of three (3) screws through the back into the cabinet top. Wall cabinets have a second nailer placed at the bottom to provide solid mounting to the wall. Tall cabinets have a nailer top, bottom, and centered on each fixed shelf. Floor mount cabinet body sides do not extend to floor; a separate sub- base is installed-

2. Unless specifically indicated otherwise, core shall be 3/4" thick particleboard. Edging and surface finishes as indicated herein. Balanced construction of all laminated panels is mandatory including concealed surfaces. No exceptions.

D. BACK PANELS:

1. Cabinet backs shall be 1/2" thick industrial particleboard core covered with thermo-fused melamine both faces for balanced construction. Color to match interior color.

2. Open cabinets and cabinets with glazed doors shall have 3/4" thick industrial particleboard core covered with GP-28 and balanced with CL- 20.

E. CABINET BASES

1. Attached bases of 3/4" thick plywood for base and tall cabinets shall support and carry the load of the end panels and the cabinet bottom to the floor. The base shall be let in from sides and back of the cabinet to allow cabinets to be installed tightly together and against a wall. This shall also provide a means to conceal top edge of applied vinyl base molding.

F. SUB-TOP

1. All under counter cabinets, except sink cabinets, shall be provided with 4” front and back rails or a full sub-top. All sink cabinets shall have a front panel above doors to support the countertop. In addition there will be a wood or plastic gusset at all (4) interior corners to provide method of fastening countertop to cabinet.

G. END PANELS:

1. All end panels and vertical dividers, except sink base units, shall receive a row hole pattern 32mm (approximately 1-1/4") on center. Adjustable shelf supports, concealed hinges, drawer slides shall mount on this line boring to maintain vertical alignment of components.

H. EDGE BANDING CABINET BODY COMPONENTS:

1. Edging shall be .018" PVC.

I. ADJUSTABLE SHELVING:

1. Shelf core shall be 3/4" thick industrial grade particleboard for shelves in cabinets up to 32” wide. 1" thick industrial grade particleboard for shelves in cabinets greater than 33" wide. NOTE: This includes shelves made of white melamine or plastic laminate colors only. Shelves made of plywood and all other melamine colors will be 3/4” thick regardless of width.

2. Semi-exposed shelves shall be edged with .018" white PVC tape.

3. Exposed shelves shall receive edge banding color selected for project.

J. INTERIOR FINISH, CABINETS WITH SEMI-EXPOSED INTERIORS:

1. Top, bottom, sides, horizontal and vertical members, and adjustable shelving to be thermo-fused melamine both sides for balanced construction.

K. INTERIOR FINISH, CABINETS WITH EXPOSED INTERIORS:

1. Top, bottom, sides, horizontal and vertical members, and adjustable shelving to be covered with GP-28 matching exterior color and balanced with CL-20.

L. EXPOSED ENDS:

1. Shall be covered with high-pressure decorative laminate GP-28 (.028"), color to be selected from manufacturers full range offering. Panels shall be balanced with CL-20 matching cabinet interior color.

M. WALL CABINET BOTTOMS:

1. Those 54" or less above finished floor shall be covered with thermo-fused melamine to match interior color of cabinet.

2. Those greater than 54" above finished floor shall be covered with high pressure decorative laminate GP-28 (.028") matching exterior color of cabinet.

N. WALL AND TALL CABINET TOPS:

1. Top edge of all tall and wall cabinet ends shall be factory banded using .018" PVC to match cabinet interior color.

2. Top surface shall have a thermo-fused melamine to match cabinet interior color.

O. DRAWERS:

1. Drawer bottoms, sides shall be 1/2” thick industrial grade particleboard with thermo-fused melamine both sides of surface for balanced construction to match interior color.

2. Top edges of drawers shall be banded with .018" PVC in same color as drawer box.

3. Drawer boxes are assembled using dowel (6mm diameter) construction. Minimum of two (2) dowels per joint; more as the height of the drawer box increases

4. Or a metal drawer side and slide with 1/2” melamine on bottoms and backs, self-closing, dowel construction, with height, side, and angle adjustment for drawer face.

P. DOOR/DRAWER FRONTS:

1. Door and drawer fronts are to be 3/4" thick industrial grade particleboard for all hinged and sliding doors. All edges shall be finished as indicated herein.

2. All cabinets 24" wide or narrower shall be furnished with one door or drawer.

3. All fronts to receive high-pressure decorative laminate GP-28 (.028") bonded to the face with CL-20 cabinet liner bonded to the back creating balanced construction.

4. All edges shall be banded with 3mm PVC available in white, almondine, dark gray, light gray, or black. All other 3mm PVC edge banding colors are available for an up charge. Both edges and outside corners of door and drawer fronts’ machine profiled to 1/8" for safety. Edges to be polished to prevent scuff marks.

2.05 DECORATIVE LAMINATE COUNTERTOPS

A. COUNTERTOPS:

1. All countertops shall be made of 1-1/8" thick industrial particleboard core laminated top face with high-pressure decorative laminate GP-50 (.050"), with BK20 backer underside. Countertops to be joined with a minimum of three (3) tight joint fasteners at each joint. Provide back and end splashes as shown on drawings of same material type. Countertop edges are square and self-edged.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.01 INSTALLATION

A. INSTALLATION:

1. Manufacturer shall not be responsible for any installation.

2. Casework is to be installed plumb and true, and is to be securely anchored in place. Scribe casework fillers as necessary for a tight fit.

B. CLEANING AND PROTECTION:

1. Adjust casework and hardware so that doors and drawer operate smoothly without binding.

2. Drawers shall be emptied of dirt and dust. Wipe out cabinet interiors to remove dirt and dust. Remove pencil or other marks, excess adhesive, etc. from cabinets and countertops. Removing all packaging, scraps, and debris resulting from installation activities.
